Wary, coasting, attention glued to the monitor, Spider's Knife dropped into the Bazaaran gravity well. Through it all, the planet remained eerily silent. As they closed, visual refined under the highest magnification. No evidence of other ships, no sight of Gregory, no transmissions were caught by the ship's sensitive antennae.

Days dragged, tension increased, and the slow wait stretched.

Iron Eyes filled her dreams. They rode together across the waving sea of grass, she on Philip's red gelding, he on his favorite black mare. Above them, the sun shimmered in yellow-white bliss. World lay before them, waiting for exploration, for them to disappear within its bounty.

With the magic of dreams, the image changed, the sky going dark as she wrapped herself in his arms, safe, enjoying the flickering light of a polewood fire. He tightened the blanket he held about her, leaning down to kiss her, dark eyes gleaming with that tender love he bestowed. The warm sensations of desire stirred as she met his lips, reaching up to pull him close, the feel of his powerful body a tonic to her tired limbs. In relief, she ran cold fingers over his dark skin, feeling the male hardness, the scars, the tension in his muscles as he warmed to her caresses. The fire crackling, she pulled him down, enjoying the rippling tone of his firm body as it pressed to her.

They began the eternal dance.

"Major Sarsa?"

Rita blinked, a deep charge in her system as she sat up, rubbing her eyes. At her movement, the lights came on in her tiny cabin. Bazaar. Deep space. Responsibility and dread in the voice over comm.

"Yes?"

"We're closing on Bazaar. If there's an ambush here, we're damned if we can find it. But Major ..."

She was on her feet, irritated at the physical realities the dream had produced in her flushed body as she reached for her combat armor. Crap!

"What's wrong, Ki?"

"Well, we've got a pretty good visual, Major. Clear day on the planet for once, too. Remote scan's unbelievably good. But Major, you'd better come see for yourself."

At the tension in his voice, Rita yanked her armor on, declining the thought of a shower, and palmed the hatch. Ki didn't sound that way unless something had really gone wrong. She hit the corridor running.
